IAS CSE Exam Pattern

Introduction
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) revised the pattern of the Civil Services Main Examination from 2014 onwards. The examination now consists of descriptive-type papers designed to test a candidate’s analytical ability, clarity of expression, and depth of knowledge.
Number of Papers
  • Total Papers: 9 (7 + 2 Qualifying)
  • All papers are descriptive in nature
Qualifying Papers (Not Counted for Merit)
There are two qualifying papers, each carrying 300 marks:
  • Any Modern Indian Language
  • English
Marks obtained in these papers are not included in the final merit ranking, but qualifying is mandatory.
General Studies Papers
  • Total General Studies Papers: 4
  • Marks per Paper: 250
  • Total Marks: 1000
The syllabus level of General Studies is approximately degree (graduation) level.
Optional Subject Papers
  • Only ONE optional subject is to be chosen
  • The optional subject consists of 2 papers
  • Marks per Paper: 250
  • Total Optional Marks: 500
Candidates can choose literature subjects as optional without having studied that literature at graduation level. The syllabus standard is higher than bachelor’s degree but lower than master’s level.
Interview / Personality Test
  • Total Marks: 275
  • Candidates can indicate their preferred interview language
  • UPSC provides translators if required
